The Family of George III and Queen Charlotte
George III and Queen Charlotte had 15 children and visitors to Kew Palace usually struggle to understand who they all were and the connection to Queen Victoria. In 2018 we created this installation with Lucy or Robert, which produced a very physical sense of just how big the family was. We used 17 velvet-wrapped mannequins, each embroidered with the name of a different family member, and a simplified version of the family tree.
The small portraits in the family tree were all done by Gainsborough and are in the Royal Collection. It allowed visitors to match names with faces as well as the age differences between the children It was a pleasure to watch visitors enter this room as they always laughed or smiled.
